David Smith

Home David Smith
David received a BA in Elementary Education form MSU.  He retired in 2010 from being a public school teacher for 36 years in Saginaw County. Most of his teaching career (29 years) was with 5, 6, and 7 year old First Graders.
He and his wife, Marie, bought the cabin on the Au Sable Mainstream and joined the Anglers in 2002.   This lead to the start of a second career,  volunteering on watershed projects.  Volunteering became a priority after retirement with a focus on invasive species and particularly Purple Loosestrife in the Au Sable watershed.
Currently (2013) David serves on the board of directors of Huron Pines, a non-profit conservation organization working to conserve the forests, lakes and streams of Northeast Michigan; the Mason-Griffith Founders Chapter of TU; is the President of the Au Sable River Property Owners’ Association (2010) and Chair of the Au Sable River Watershed Committee (2012). From May to November in 2011, 201212, and 2013 David was an AmeriCorps Volunteer site supervisor for the Au Sable River Watershed Committee. Including the above mentioned organizations, David is a member of FFF and MFFC.
When not involved in river habitat work, David enjoys photography, fishing, kayaking and sharing love for the river with grandchildren and anyone else who will listen.
