Rusty Gates receives the Michigan Environmental Council 2009 Petoskey Prize for Environmental Leadership

Petoskey Prize for Grassroots Leadership
MEC inaugerated the Petoskey Prize for Grassroots Leadership in 2001. The prize is given annually to individuals whose commitment, creativity and courage have inspired others to safeguard Michigan's air, land and water for future generations. Winners are able to designate $5,000 to the Michigan environmental organization of their choice.

Here is what the Michigan Environmental Council had to say about Rusty:  "Quietly, tenaciously, and with courage borne of his convictions, Rusty Gates has spent a lifetime protecting and improving his beloved A Sable River.  That labor of love has earned him the 2009 Petoskey Prize for Environmental Leadership.  It is awarded to citizen heroes whose work protecting Michigan's natural heritage is marked by courage, commitment and creativity.

Gate has organized a nationwide network of experts and volunteers ready to respond when the alarm sounds.  They've won David-versus-Goliath legal battles with oil and gas developers, halted plans to pump contaminated water into the watershed, and turned out phenomenal numbers of volunteers for river cleanup days.

Gates owns Gates Au Sable Lodge near Grayling and is an icon in the fly fishing community.  He was a driving force behind the successful establishment of 'no-kill' fishing along the 'Holy Waters' stretch of the river.  That controversial campaign earned him death threats, but has proved an unqualified conservation success."
