Last spring, the Anglers embarked on an initiative to reengineer its fundraising efforts to enhance its ability to sponsor long-term, ongoing conservation projects and to shore up its reserves for new endeavors. One step in the planning phase of this strategic effort, called simply the Anglers’ Capital Campaign, was to create several small committees comprised of members that would further the interests of the organization in different ways.
As members will recall, Capital Campaign chair Jay Gleason (also our newly elected vice president) mailed a letter this past summer asking for volunteers for the six committees (Campaign Steering; Administration, Tracking and Reporting; Events; Major Prospect Identification and Management; Publications; and Stewardship). Response to the appeal was promising: thirty-five members and directors signed up for a spot on one or another team.
However, there are still specific needs that must be filled. Some of these positions may ultimately be filled by committee members, but at press time the positions described below are (or will be) open. If you are interested in any of the positions below, which are primarily volunteer oriented, please contact me at ddrislane@globalbiz.net. I will either answer your inquiry directly or steer you to one of the committee chairs. Thanks in advance. Now, let’s see some hands!
Editor of The Riverwatch
After a laudable four-year stint as your estimable editor, Bob Linsenman is looking to pass the reigns to a new editor. (This is his last issue.) Though the job can be rewarding for those with a journalistic bent, we don’t want to mislead you: it is perhaps one of the most demanding positions in the organization. The editor of The Riverwatch has the following responsibilities: editorial policy for the newsletter; solicitation of manuscripts and other newsworthy materials; collection, review and editing of material for publication; responsibility for overall content of each issue; collection and management of accompanying materials (graphics, photos, etc.); authorship of each issue’s editorial (or granting of guest editorials); authorship of articles as needed; maintaining a close working liaison with The Riverwatch pre-press effort (i.e. layout of text and graphics prior to printing), including first-pass copy fitting (i.e. making decisions on paring or lengthening copy to fit each issue); final approval of camera-ready art/copy prior to printing; coordinating pre-press and printing activities; determination of issue circulation (number of copies); coordination with Membership Director to deliver mailing list; review and approval of post-printing mail house activities. Though The Riverwatch is a quarterly publication per se, the actual average issue production is between three and four per calendar year. The editor is expected to attend board meetings to report on the newsletter status, review costs, and gather content ideas from directors. Those persons interested in this position may contact Dan Drislane at ddrislane@globalbiz.net.
Pre-Press Specialist
If production of The Riverwatch were likened to a process, this position would be situated mid-stream--downstream of the editor’s primary duties, and upstream of the printer’s job. The pre-press person’s job is specialized and requires proven experience in graphics and textual layout and pre-press production, including knowledge of set-up requirements for the printer. We hope that one of our members does this kind of work for a living -- or at least knows someone who does. Candidates will be proficient using graphics and layout software, such as QuarkXpress®, PageMaker®, Adobe PhotoShop® and Illustrator®. They should also have access to a color scanner and color printer. Typical responsibilities include: gathering of copy and graphics materials from the editor (preferably electronically, but by other means also); scanning of hardcopy collateral (photos, graphics, drawings, maps, etc.); conferring with editor on general goals of each issue, general layout, priority of articles and graphics; first pass layout of text and graphics; sending first-pass composite renderings back to editor for review; conferring with editor on changes required; second pass layout of text and graphics; final review (including proof-reading) and approval with editor (as required); pre-press set-up for printer, including paste-ups, color separations, production of files for film negative or positive RC stat development; inspection of final camera-ready materials for printer; delivery (or supervision of such) to printer; coordination with printer on printing activities. The Anglers of the Au Sable pays for all pre-press materials required. Note: Historically, the Anglers have paid for this service, though we wish to control this expense in the future. Those persons interested in this position may contact ddrislane@globalbiz.net.
Printing Services
Though we regularly use several printers for various projects, including The Riverwatch, we are currently reviewing our options. One key consideration is that, from experience, we know the pre-press specialist (and often the editor) must have a working relationship with the printer of The Riverwatch. It is beneficial for the pre-press specialist to be in geographical proximity to the printer. If you know a printer that may be interested in quoting work for the Anglers, including production of The Riverwatch, please contact Dan Drislane at ddrislane@globalbiz.net or (248) 553-2077.
Mailing House
The last activity in the production of The Riverwatch is the binding, sorting and mailing of the newsletter to you. The Anglers have used a variety of means over the years, from handling this activity internally, to farming it out to a licensed mail house. Depending on our choice of printer, a new mail house may be needed. As with the printer above, if you know a company that is eager to quote on this type of work, please contact Dan at ddrislane@globalbiz.net or (248) 553-2077.
Merchandise Manager
One of the Anglers’ traditional fundraising channels is through the sale of pins, patches, hats and other apparel. Though our erstwhile President and Membership Director usually manage the ordering and distribution of merchandise, we can always use a helping hand with the logistics. For a better idea what the job entails, please drop an email to Rusty at gator@freeway.net.
WebMaster
We are in the process of expanding our web presence beyond the site we have for The Riverwatch. At press time, we have identified some people that will build the site. However, we are always on the prowl for cutting-edge web programmers that can lend a hand in helping the Anglers improve the site or its performance. If you’re a web site specialist with experience in web programming tools like Java and graphics tools like Flash, and you’re interested in chipping in to help improve the Angler’s web presence, contact Dan at ddrislane@globalbiz.net.
Capital Equipment
This isn’t quite fitting with the gist of this article, but the Anglers have a specific need for equipment to be donated (or leased for a token sum). What is needed: a VGA color projector that connects with a PC (for presentations); laptop computer (for stream work); color printer and scanner; portable booth material/structures; chain saw (for stream work); paper (for laser printing); walkie-talkie units (for stream work); digital camera (for a variety of projects); general implements for stream improvement work (contact Rusty at gator@freeway.net). Naturally, we appreciate that all donated equipment donated is in working order. RWOL
