River Restoration: Continued Progress

from Restoring The Au Sable, December 1996

Restoration efforts on the Au Sable River continued throughout 1996 with the restoration of over twenty erosion sites, and six miles of instream habitat structures. Projects include the construction of a timber bridge on May Lake Road in Frederick and the completion of three other road stream crossing sites. Six erosion sites were repaired on the Mainstream in the upper watershed above Mio, seven sites below Mio, two sites on the North Branch, and one on the South Branch. Funding from a federal 319 grant made it possible to experiment with some new techniques and the long overdue repair of the heavily-used access below Stephan Bridge.

Over six miles of instream habitat structures in the upper river were rehabilitated this past summer by crews from the Crawford/Roscommon Conservation District. Cedar logs were used to repair 467 instream structures between Stephan Bridge and Wakeley Bridge. These structures, originally constructed in the 1940s and again in the 1970s, were in desperate need of repair. Thanks to financial support from the Anglers of the Au Sable, Trout Unlimited, Property Owners Associations, and other private and public contributions this program on the Mainstream of the Au Sable is complete.
