By Ed McGlinn
Lovers of trout and rivers could only be fools or in denial if they were pleased with the environmental policies of our governor. If you are concerned about our future then it's time to get involved. Let the governor, your senator, and your representatives know of your distress. And let us know as well.We will print excerpts from your letters.
If you think our view of the governor is too harsh, you should read The North Woods Call. An equally disapproving critic has been Tom Washington, a strong supporter of the present governor in the past two elections. We should all be wearing black armbands this month in memory of Mr. Washington who was undoubtedly the greatest obstacle to Mr. Engler's anti-environment crusade. We will miss him dearly.
Moreover, only a fool would be pleased with the assault on the environment in Congress. For example, the House has passed a Dirty Water Bill and it likely will clear the Senate; you should read Ted Williams' account in the recent Fly Rod & Reel magazine. (Williams is the best informed and most talented environmental writer around. Incidentally, if it matters, he has been a registered Republican since he was a young man.)
The barbarians are at the gate, my friends, and time is getting short. Get involved. Write letters. Stir the pot. Fax the SOBs. Let them know you care. RWOL
