In Spring of 1988, the Anglers board of directors voted to establish The Riverkeeper of the Year Award to be given to those persons who made significant contributions to conservation. Specifically, the language of the Award reads, “In recognition for substantial and unselfish contributions to the preservation, protection and enhancement of the Au Sable River System.”

George Griffith (deceased)
Co-founder of Trout Unlimited. Long time Au Sable resident.
For a legacy of championing the Au Sable and conservation ethics through his efforts with Trout Unlimited and, later, the Anglers of the Au Sable.

Gary Schnicke
District Fisheries Chief, Mio District, 1970s.
For his unique and substantial contributions to the Au Sable fishery during his tenure as district fisheries biologist.

For his role in co-founding the Michigan Environmental Trust Ltd. and his success in litigating against the DNR et al regarding Antrim gas drilling and production.

Jim Schramm
FFF legal counsel, GLC president, Anglers director and founder.
For his longstanding and continuing commitment to excellence in guiding the legal framework of both the national FFF and the Anglers, and his continued efforts with the MHRC. (See Ed McGlinn's Riverwatch On-Line article regarding this award.)

George Alexander, Bernie Fowler
Rapid Response Tree Recovery Team.
For their continued commitment and timely response to recovering and stabilizing fallen trees (for trout cover and erosion control) over the Au Sable's three branches.

Bruce Johnson
Anglers founding director, secretary, Membership Committee chair
For his sustained contributions to the smooth and quality administration of the organization.

Steve Sendek
DNR Fisheries Biologist, Mio District (includes the upper Au Sable system)
For his tireless devotion and continued excellence in shepherding the greater Au Sable fishery and his unique ability to work with conservation and citizen groups for the long-term betterment of the Au Sable ecosystem.

In 1994, the board of directors voted to establish a special award of merit, The Kingfisher Award, to recognize specific accomplishments of individuals. In January, 1995, Department of Natural Resources employees Jim Truchan and Gary Whelan were each awarded Kingfishers for their outstanding work in the FERC Hydro Relicensing Process.

In April, 1995, the board awarded a Resolution of Lifetime Achievement to Frank A. “Bud” Powell, a staunch supporter of catch and release as early as 1938 and a man who recorded in his fishing logs having caught (with his sons) and released over 30,000 twelve inch-plus trout. Bud died in May 1995.
